The uncertain future of Cherokee Golf Course

Dear Subscriber,

Cherokee Golfing Course retains the distinction of being Louisville’s oldest community class and is one particular of the oldest municipal golfing programs in the United States. A controversy resurfaced this thirty day period, however, when Metro Parks officers questioned for general public enter on a past proposal to get rid of the training course in favor of parkland.

Metro Governing administration reporter Billy Kobin dug into the tale, detailing the system set forth by the Olmsted Parks Conservancy right after phone calls for proposals from Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer’s administration almost a few years in the past. If the program goes by way of, the course’s clubhouse could switch into a household-type restaurant and Willow Pond stands to develop into a place spot for local fishers and boaters.

Billy wrote that the Olmsted Parks Conservancy previously appeared to be a key contender to transform the study course into additional park area, but things were paused at the time the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

These days, the conservancy is nevertheless the main group that has submitted a proposal for what to do with the training course. Billy tracked down Olmsted Parks Conservancy’s chief, Layla George, for this story, and also reached out to community golfers many thanks in part to Metro Councilwoman Cassie Chambers Armstrong, whose 8th District includes the park.

People have come out both for and from the plan, but with impending revisions and any modifications to the park necessitating city approval, the course’s destiny remains unclear.

Many thanks to your help, Billy and other reporters from The Courier Journal are ready to go out into the community and report stories like this one particular and other people that have the opportunity to influence the neighborhood for years to arrive. As usually, we tremendously recognize your membership. Thank you for supporting nearby journalism.

Sincerely,
