Mom Slammed for Talking on Phone Instead of Making Kids, Husband Breakfast
In a post going viral on social media, a mother is being slammed by the internet for talking on the phone instead of cooking breakfast for her children and husband.
Published to Reddit’s r/AmITheA**hole forum, a father under the anonymous username u/married_bro shared his story to get the opinions of the “AITA” community to see if he was in the wrong. The popular post has over 5,000 upvotes and 800 comments.
The Reddit user began his story by explaining his daily routine which is going to the gym, walking the dogs, cleaning, cooking breakfast then heading to work and other chores. His wife is a stay-at-home mom that does chores at home including laundry, paying bills, walking the dogs at night, and homeschooling their three children.
The original poster (OP) explained where the conflict came in.
He wrote, “My wife said she wanted to cook breakfast for me and the kids as it was a Sunday and we were all free. I did my usual routine of gym, took the kids and dogs to the park and then fed the dogs. I also gave my car to the mechanic. By the time all this was done, it was almost 9:00 am. The kids were starting to get hungry and so was I. I went to the kitchen to check what my wife was doing. She had apparently not started cooking yet because her childhood friends had called her.”

“So I asked her if I should make breakfast, she said that she’d be coming in few minutes. Half an hour later, she was still on call so I cut up fruits for the kids to snack on while I made some chocolate waffles, bacon and eggs. Also a glass of milk for each of the kids and a cup of coffee for myself. When my wife got off call, it was 12:30pm,” he continued.
The OP and his children had lunch while watching a movie when his wife got off the phone. She was upset when she saw all the food in the kitchen and wanted to speak with the OP privately. She explained how disrespectful he was since he cooked breakfast, knowing that she wanted to. He told her that she can make lunch but she argued that her children won’t be hungry since they ate “junk food.”
“She refused to eat breakfast and said she’s going with her sister for sushi. Before going she told me, ‘since you don’t need me to cook, you can make lunch and dinner too,'” he concluded.

We’ve all heard the saying “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” and it’s true. Eating breakfast each morning can help your body in more ways than one. Per Better Health Channel, eating in the morning can help boost your energy levels, replenishes your supply of glucose, can help you concentrate as well as providing essential nutrients to keep you healthy. Eating breakfast also helps reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
What are some healthy breakfast options to begin your day? According to Cleveland Clinic, perfect choices include oatmeal with berries, peanut butter with an English muffin or high-fiber toast, greek yogurt, cottage cheese and an omelette.
Reddit users were quick to defend the OP for cooking his children breakfast.
“[Not the a**hole]. Did she expect you to wait THREE HOURS for breakfast? [What the hell?],” questioned F-Penn, receiving the top comment of over 10,000 upvotes.
“Definitely [not the a**hole]. You fed your kids when they were hungry and let your wife chat to her friend. She’ll calm down and realise she’s being silly,” u/Select-Run-2394 wrote.
“[Not the a**hole]. I am curious though how talking on the phone stops her making breakfast? I have carried on many conversations on the phone while cooking. Sure you occasionally have to put the phone down to deal with a hot pot but you can put the other person on speakerphone or ask them to hold on a minute. 3 hours doing nothing towards making breakfast for hungry kids is ridiculous,” u/katamino explained.
